ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “No envy is permitted except in two cases: a man to whom Allah has granted the Qur’an, so he rises with it in worship through the watches of the night and the hours of the day; and a man to whom Allah has granted wealth, so he spends it—through the watches of the night and the hours of the day.”
I heard Sufyān relate this report many times and never once did I hear him mention the word “good,” even though it belongs to the sound wording of the ḥadīth.
Allah the Exalted has said, “And do good” (Qur’an 22:77), thus affirming that their goodness is proven by action.
