ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated it to me; Jarīr narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not envy one another except in two situations: (1) a man to whom Allah has granted the Qur’an, so he recites it through the watches of the night and the hours of the day, and another man says, ‘If I had been given what he has been given, I would do what he is doing’; (2) a man to whom Allah has granted wealth, so he spends it in its rightful causes, and another man says, ‘If I had been given what he has been given, I would do what he is doing.’” Shuʿbah also transmitted this report from al-Aʿmash; I heard Abū Ṣāliḥ relate it in similar terms.
