ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd narrated to us; Ḥaywah related; Bashīr ibn Abī ʿAmr al-Khulānī told me that al-Walīd ibn Qays al-Tujaybī narrated to him that he heard Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) say: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaim: ‘After sixty years there will rise a people of whom it is said: “They neglected prayer and pursued their lusts, so they will meet with ruin” (Maryam 19:59). Then another generation will come who recite the Qur’an yet it does not pass beyond their collarbones. The Qur’an is recited by three kinds of people: a believer, a hypocrite, and a profligate.’”
Bashīr continued, “I asked al-Walīd, ‘Who are those three?’ He replied, ‘The hypocrite disbelieves in it, the profligate lives off it, and the believer believes in it.’”}
