Mūsā narrated to us; Sulaymān related to us; from Thābit; from Anas—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:

When the verse, “Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him” ⦗49:2⦘ was revealed, Thābit ibn Qays ibn Shamās—whose voice was naturally loud—remained seated in his house and said, “I am the one who used to raise my voice above the Prophet’s voice and address him loudly; my deeds have been ruined and I am among the people of the Fire.”

The Prophet ﷺ noticed his absence, so a man went to check on him and reported, “He is saying such-and-such.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “He is one of the people of Paradise.” Thereafter we would see him walking among us, fully aware that he was destined for Paradise.

On the Day of al-Yamāmah, when some of us began to fall back, he advanced—having already shrouded and perfumed himself—and said, “How disgraceful it is that you withdraw from your comrades!” He fought on until he was killed. ⦗111⦘

Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: “Ibn ʿUmar regarded raising one’s voice with the Quran as an act of worship.”
