Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUbayd-Allah ibn ʿAbd-Allah, that ʿAbd-Allah ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed him, saying:
“Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb (may Allah be pleased with him) related this account to me. He then called for the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it was read aloud. It said:
‘In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
“O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is just between us and you: that we worship none but Allah, that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us takes others as lords beside Allah. But if they turn away, then say, ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims.’” (Āl ʿImrān 3:64)’
When he finished reciting it, the voices of the Byzantine nobles around him rose, and their clamour became great.
ʿAbd-Allah narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us; Yūnus related, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUbayd-Allah ibn ʿAbd-Allah, from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), who conveyed the same report, and in it were the words: ‘In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Especially Merciful, from Muhammad, the servant of Allah and His Messenger…’—and so on.
ʿAmr ibn Zurārah narrated to us; Ziyād narrated, from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: Ibn Shihāb informed me, from ʿUbayd-Allah ibn ʿAbd-Allah, from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both): Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb (may Allah be pleased with him) related this to me, and the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had reached Heraclius with Dihyah ibn Khalīfah. It began: ‘In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Especially Merciful…’—in like manner.
Imām Abū ʿAbd-Allah said: Maʿmar and Hilāl ibn Rawād also transmitted it from Ibn Shihāb.
