He also said: ‘ʿAbdān related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak related to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: “One may place the muṣḥaf (copy of the Qur’an) on the very bed in which he experiences a nocturnal emission, engages in intercourse, and even perspires upon it.”

Saʿīd ibn Jubayr once urinated, then performed ablution except for washing his feet, after which he took up the muṣḥaf.

Ṭāwūs said, concerning a man wearing a belt that holds silver coins: “He may relieve himself while it is still on him.”

Ibrāhīm said: “People inevitably carry their provision with them, yet some of the Successors preferred not to enter the latrine wearing a ring on which the name of Allah is engraved.”

Abū ʿAbd Allāh remarked: “This view is sound and does not entail a ruling of prohibition.”

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not swear by your forefathers or by the Messiah. No one is permitted to swear by any created being—neither by their lifetimes, nor by their words, nor by the words of the unbelievers and hypocrites, nor by the utterance of Iblīs. Whoever swears by the speech of the Magians or the like has not incurred the penalty of breaking an oath.”

It is merely reported—from Ibn Masʿūd, from Ibrāhīm, and as a mursal report from the Prophet ﷺ—that: “Whoever swears by a surah of the Qur’an must give an expiation for every verse contained in it; but the voices of created beings carry no such expiation.”
