Muḥammad ibn Kathīr narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAmr ibn Shuraḥbīl, from ʿAbd Allāh (may Allāh be pleased with him), who said:
I asked, “O Messenger of Allāh, which sin is the greatest?” He replied, “To set up a rival to Allāh while He created you.” I said, “And then which?” He said, “That you kill your child for fear that he will share your food with you.” I said, “And then which?” He said, “That you commit adultery with your neighbor’s wife.”
Allāh then revealed, in confirmation of the Prophet’s statement: “And those who do not invoke with Allāh another deity …” (al-Furqān 25:68).
Musaddad narrated to us; Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Sufyān; Manṣūr and Sulaymān narrated to me, from Abū Wāʾil, with a similar wording.
