Abu al-Yaman narrated to us; Shuʿayb related to us, from al-Zuhri; Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman informed me that ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah ibn Masʿud said: I heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say,

“During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ people were taken to task by means of revelation, but now that revelation has ceased we hold you accountable only for the deeds that are outwardly visible to us. Whoever displays goodness, we grant him safety and draw him close; whatever lies concealed within him is not our concern—Allah will call him to account for his inner state. Whoever displays evil, we neither trust him nor accept his word, even if he claims that his inner state is sound.”

Abu ʿAbd Allah said: ʿUthman ibn Salih also transmitted it; Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Yunus informed me, and Salamah related it from ʿUqayl.
