ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu ʿAmir narrated to us; Qurrah transmitted, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, who said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakrah—and another man whom I consider superior to ʿAbd al-Rahman, namely Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman—related to me on the authority of Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice and said, “Do you know what day this is?” We replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He remained silent until we thought he might call it by another name, then he said, “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” We answered, “Indeed it is.”
He then asked, “What month is this?” We replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He kept silent until we thought he would rename it, then said, “Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?” We answered, “Indeed.”
He continued, “And what land is this?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” Again he paused until we thought he would give it another name, then said, “Is it not the Sacred Precinct?” We answered, “Indeed.”
He then declared, “Truly your blood and your property are inviolable to one another, just as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours—until the day you meet your Lord. Have I conveyed the message?” They replied, “Yes.” He said, “O Allah, bear witness. Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent, for it may be that a carrier of the message makes it reach one who is more mindful of it than the original hearer. And do not turn back after I am gone as unbelievers, striking one another’s necks.”
Musaddad narrated to us; Yahya narrated to us; Qurrah transmitted; Ibn Sirin told me, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakrah and from another man whom I regard as superior to ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakrah, on the authority of Abu Bakrah, from the Prophet ﷺ with this same wording. He added, “Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent, for a conveyor may deliver it to someone more receptive than himself,” and that indeed came to pass.
