ʿAbd Allah ibn Yusuf narrated to us; al-Layth transmitted; Saʿid related to me, from Abu Shurayh, that he once said to ʿAmr ibn Saʿid when the latter was sending military detachments to Mecca:
“O commander, allow me to repeat to you words spoken by the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of the Conquest—words my ears heard, my heart grasped, and my eyes witnessed as he uttered them. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said:
‘Allah Himself has made Mecca inviolable; people did not make it so. Therefore it is unlawful for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood there or to fell a tree within it. Should someone claim a dispensation to fight there because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought in it, say to him: Allah granted permission to His Messenger but He has not granted it to you. He allowed me only for one brief hour of a single day, after which its sanctity returned today exactly as it was yesterday. Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent.’”
