ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Yahya ibn Saʿid narrated; al-Fuḍayl ibn Ghazwān narrated; ʿIkrimah narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people on the Day of Sacrifice and said,
“O people, what day is this?”
They replied, “A sacred day.”
He asked, “And what city is this?”
They answered, “A sacred city.”
He asked, “And what month is this?”
They said, “A sacred month.”
He then declared, “Your lives and your property are as inviolable as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours.” He repeated these words three times, then raised his head toward the sky and said, “O Allah, have I conveyed (the message)?”
Ibn ʿAbbās added, “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, this was his final counsel to his community: ‘Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent. Do not turn back after me as unbelievers, striking one another’s necks.’”
