ʿUbayd Allah ibn Mūsā narrated to us; (it came) from Isrāʾīl, from Mūsā ibn Abī ʿĀʾisha, that he asked Saʿīd ibn Jubayr about the Almighty’s words, “Do not move your tongue with it” (75:16). He replied: Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—said, “The Prophet would move his tongue when revelation descended upon him.” So it was said to him, “Do not move your tongue with it (75:16); you fear that it might slip away.” Then came the verse, “Indeed, upon Us rests its collection” (75:17)—that is, “Gather it in your breast—and its recitation.” “So when We have recited it” (75:18) means, “When it has been revealed to you,” (then comes) “follow its recitation. Then, indeed, upon Us is its clarification” (75:19)—that is, “We shall keep it firm upon your tongue.”
