Mūsa ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Abū ʿAwana narrated to us; Mūsa ibn Abī ʿĀʾisha narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with them—regarding the verse, “Do not move your tongue with it in order to hasten it” (75:16):

He said, “When revelation came down the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would undergo great strain, and part of what he did was to move his lips.”

Ibn ʿAbbās then said, “I will move them for you just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to move them.” Saʿīd added, “I shall move them as I saw Ibn ʿAbbās move them,” and he moved his lips.

Then Allah revealed, “Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it; indeed, upon Us rests its collection” (75:17) “and its recitation.” Ibn ʿAbbās explained, “Commit it to your heart, and We shall make you recite it.”

“So when We have recited it, follow its recitation” (75:18)—that is, “Listen to it attentively and keep silent.”

Then, “Indeed, upon Us is its clarification” (75:19)—meaning, “It is for Us to cause you to recite it.”

He continued, “After that, whenever Gabriel came to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would listen; and when Gabriel departed, the Prophet ﷺ would recite it exactly as he had recited it.”
