Muhammad ibn Musa al-Qattan narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us; Saʿid ibn Zayd informed us; ʿAmr ibn Malik al-Nukri narrated, from Abuʾl-Jawzaʾ Aws ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Rabʿi, from ʿAʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was by the Kaʿbah and raised his voice in supplication, saying, “O Allah, O Most Merciful!” When the people of Mecca heard him, they crowded around him, whereupon Allah revealed: “Say: Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful—whichever you invoke, His are the Most Beautiful Names” (al-Isrāʾ 17:110), to the end of the verse.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْقَطَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَنْبَأَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَالِكٍ النُّكْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ أَوْسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرَّبَعِيِّ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ﵂، قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ فَجَهَرَ بِالدُّعَاءِ , فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ: «يَا اللَّهُ، يَا رَحْمَنُ» فَسَمِعَتْهُ أَهْلُ مَكَّةَ، فأَقْبَلُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ: ﴿قُلِ ادْعُوا اللَّهَ أَوِ ادْعُوا الرَّحْمَنَ أَيًّا مَا تَدْعُو فَلَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنى﴾ إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ
