ʿAmr ibn Khālid narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Salamah related to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Dāwūd ibn al-Ḥuṣayn, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“When the Prophet — peace and blessings be upon him — was in Mecca, he would recite aloud whenever he led the prayer, and the idolaters would drive people away from him, saying, ‘Do not listen to this Qur’an; make a clamor over it so that you may prevail.’ Yet when he lowered his voice in recitation, those who wished to listen could not hear. Thereupon Allah revealed: ‘Do not raise your voice in your prayer, nor recite it too softly’ (al-Isrāʾ 17:110), up to the end of the verse.”
