Khalq Afal al-Ibad lil-BukhariAl-Bukhari

ʿAmr ibn Zurārah narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to me; Abū Bishr informed us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse: “Do not raise your voice in your prayer, nor speak it in too low a tone” (al-Isrāʾ 17:110). He said: “This verse was sent down while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still hiding in Mecca. Whenever he led his Companions in prayer, he would recite the Quran aloud, and when the polytheists heard it they would curse the Quran, the One who revealed it, and the one who conveyed it. Allah therefore said to His Prophet: ‘Do not raise your voice in your prayer,’ meaning in your recitation, lest the polytheists hear it and revile the Quran; ‘and do not speak it in too low a tone,’ that is, so softly that your Companions cannot hear your recitation—‘but seek a way between those two’ (al-Isrāʾ 17:110).” This report was also transmitted by al-Aʿmash from Jaʿfar ibn Iyās.
