ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Bishr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse, “Do not raise your voice in your prayer, nor speak it in too low a tone” (al-Isrāʾ 17:110). He said, “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the Quran aloud, the polytheists would curse the Quran and the one who had brought it, something the Muslims could not bear. But when he lowered his voice, that too weighed heavily upon his Companions.” Thereupon Allah, Exalted is He, revealed: “Do not raise your voice in your prayer, nor speak it in too low a tone” (al-Isrāʾ 17:110).
