Muhammad narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah said: Muhammad ibn Yasar narrated to me, from Qatadah, from Safwan ibn Muhriz, from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him). He said:
“While I was walking with him, a man approached and asked, ‘O Ibn ʿUmar, how did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speak about the private audience (najwa)?’ He replied, ‘I heard him say: “The believer draws near to his Lord until He places His kanaf (covering) over him. Then He brings out his record, makes him acknowledge his sins and says, ‘Do you admit them?’ He answers, ‘My Lord, I do.’ When he has confessed as much as Allah wills, He says, ‘I screened them for you in the world, and today I forgive you.’ Then he is handed the book of his good deeds. As for the disbeliever, a proclamation will be made concerning him before all witnesses,” as Allah says: “And the witnesses will say, ‘These are the ones who lied against their Lord; surely the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers.’” (Hud 18).’”
Ibn al-Mubarak said, “His kanaf means His covering.”
