Muslim narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughafal (may Allah be pleased with him): “On the day Mecca was conquered, the Prophet — peace and blessings be upon him — recited Sūrah al-Fath and he modulated its tones as he recited.”
Muʿāwiyah added, “If I wished, I could imitate for you exactly how the Messenger of Allah — peace and blessings be upon him — recited it.”
Abu al-Walīd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us with this same report.
Abu ʿAbd Allah further said: The Prophet — peace and blessings be upon him — was asked, “Who among the people has the finest recitation?” He replied, “The one who, when you hear him, you perceive that he is in awe of Allah.”
It is also related from Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet — peace and blessings be upon him: “The best remembrance is the hidden one.”
Allah Most High says: “Call upon your Lord with humility and privately” (al-Aʿrāf 7:55), and: “And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and fear, without raising your voice in words” (al-Aʿrāf 7:205).
ʿUmar once heard Muʿādh the reciter raising his voice with the Quran, whereupon he quoted: “Indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the braying of donkeys” (Luqmān 31:19).
