Aḥmad ibn Yūnus narrated to us; Abū Shihāb narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, who said:
“ʿAbdullāh said to me, ‘Recite.’ ʿAlqamah had a beautiful voice, so he began to recite, whereupon ʿAbdullāh said, ‘Slowly and distinctly—may my father and mother be ransomed for you.’
Allah the Exalted says: ‘When the Quran is recited, listen to it attentively and remain silent’ (al-Aʿrāf 7:204); and He says: ‘Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord’ (al-Kahf 18:27); and He says: ‘Those who recite the Book of Allah’ (Fāṭir 35:29); and He says: ‘You did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you write it down with your right hand’ (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:48); and He says: ‘They recite it with its true recitation’ (al-Baqarah 2:121); and He says: ‘Remember what is recited in your homes of the verses of Allah and wisdom’ (al-Aḥzāb 33:34); and He says: ‘They recite the verses of Allah throughout the night’ (Āl ʿImrān 3:113). ⦗70⦘
Abū ʿAbdullāh (may Allah have mercy on him) commented: These verses clarify that recitation comes from the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions, while the revelation itself is from the Lord. Among the proofs is the statement of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her): ‘I never thought that Allah would send down concerning me a revelation that would be recited.’ Thus she made it clear that the sending down is from Allah, and people are the ones who recite it.
