Adam narrated to us; Ibn Abi Dhiʿb narrated to us; Muslim ibn Jundub narrated to us, from Nawfal ibn Iyas al-Hudhali, who said:
“We used to stand in prayer during the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab in the mosque. One group would be over here, another group over there, and the people would drift toward the reciter whose voice they found most beautiful. ʿUmar said, ‘I see they have turned the Quran into songs! By Allah, if I am able, I will certainly put a stop to this.’ It was only three nights later that he ordered Ubayy to lead them in prayer.”
