Section: The Companion’s Statement and Its Authority
A Companion’s statement—meaning the word of anyone who met the Prophet ﷺ as a believer and died in that state—is treated as follows:
• If the statement became well-known and the rest of the Companions neither objected to it nor opposed it, but rather affirmed it, then it represents consensus.
• If its widespread circulation is unknown yet no other Companion is reported to have contradicted it, then, according to the soundest opinion, it is authoritative evidence.
• However, if another Companion does oppose it, the statement is no longer considered binding proof.
