As for those actions that are originally permissible, the Lawgiver has sanctioned and allowed them. However, they can serve as pathways to other ends: if they lead to something good, they take on the ruling of the commanded acts; and if they lead to something evil, they take on the ruling of the forbidden acts. This is a fundamental principle: the legal status of the means is determined by the status of the ends.
