Hammad ibn Salamah likewise narrated it: “‘Ali ibn Zayd informed us from Zurarah,” except that he said: “from Malik ibn ‘Amr al-Qushayri.” He stated this categorically, without uncertainty. Ibn Jad‘an is weak, so his report cannot be used as proof, particularly when it contradicts one such as Qatadah, who is trustworthy and relied upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
516 — “The Lord’s pleasure lies in the parent’s pleasure, and the Lord’s displeasure lies in the parent’s displeasure.”
Al-Tirmidhi (1/346), Ibn Hibban (2026), and al-Hasan ibn Sufyan in al-Arba‘in (69/2) transmitted it through the route of Khalid ibn al-Harith: Shu‘bah narrated to us from Ya‘la ibn ‘Ata’, from his father, from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with this wording.
Al-Tirmidhi then transmitted it through the route of Muhammad ibn Ja‘far, and al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad, no. (2), from Shu‘bah through the same chain, as attributed to Ibn ‘Amr, without attributing it to the Prophet. Al-Tirmidhi said: “This is more authentic. Thus did the companions of Shu‘bah narrate it from Shu‘bah, from Ya‘la ibn ‘Ata’, from his father, from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, as attributed to the Companion. We know of no one who attributed it to the Prophet from Shu‘bah except Khalid ibn al-Harith, and Khalid ibn al-Harith is trustworthy and dependable.”
I say: Both Shaykhs relied upon him, and al-Hafiz said in al-Taqrib: “Trustworthy and precise.” I have found corroborating narrations for its attribution to the Prophet:
The first is that ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us from Shu‘bah through the same chain, attributing it to the Prophet. Al-Hakim transmitted it (4/151–152) through two routes from him and said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him, and it is as they said. ‘Abd al-Rahman is Ibn Mahdi, whose trustworthiness, retention, and precision are well known. One of al-Hakim’s two routes is through ‘Abdullah ibn Ahmad, from his father, from him, but I have not seen it in Ahmad’s Musnad. Allah knows best.
