- “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited grooming one’s hair except every other day.”
It was recorded by Abu Dawud (4159), al-Nasa’i (2/276), al-Tirmidhi (1/326), Ibn Hibban (1480), Ahmad (4/86), al-Harbi in Gharib al-Hadith (“Obscure Hadith Expressions”) (5/79/2), al-Kashshi in Juz’ al-Ansari (“The Ansari Treatise”) (fol. 11/1)—from whom Abu Nu‘aym narrated it (6/276)—Ibn ‘Adi in al-Kamil (“The Complete Work”) (fol. 8/2), and al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah (“Explanation of the Sunnah”) (3/212/1), through various routes from Hisham ibn Hassan, who said: I heard al-Hasan narrate from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal, with this wording.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good and authentic hadith.”
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators used by both al-Bukhari and Muslim. However, al-Hasan al-Basri practised tadlis, and he narrated it with ambiguous “from” wording in all the routes cited; yet it has two corroborating reports by which it is strengthened.
The first is from Ibn ‘Umar, attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with the same wording. Al-‘Uqayli recorded it in al-Du‘afa’ (“The Weak Narrators”) (398), through Muhammad ibn Musa al-Hariri: Juwayriyah ibn Asma’ narrated to us from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar. He said: “No one corroborates Muhammad ibn Musa in this report. It has, however, been narrated by another route, with a chain of transmission sounder than this one.”
I say: Al-‘Uqayli seems to be referring thereby to the preceding hadith of al-Hasan.
The other corroborating report is: “He used to forbid us from overindulgence. We asked, ‘What is overindulgence?’ He replied, ‘Grooming one’s hair every day.’”
- “He used to forbid us from overindulgence. We asked, ‘What is overindulgence?’ He replied, ‘Grooming one’s hair every day.’”
Al-Nasa’i recorded it (2/276–277): Isma‘il ibn Mas‘ud informed us; Khalid ibn al-Harith narrated to us from Kahmas, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Shuqayq, who said:
