499 — “Whoever begs while possessing enough to suffice him, his begging will come on the Day of Resurrection as scratches, abrasions, or wounds upon his face.” It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is sufficient for him?” He said: “Fifty dirhams, or their equivalent in gold.”
It was narrated by Abu Dawud (1626), al-Nasa’i (1/363), al-Tirmidhi (1/126), al-Darimi (1/386), Ibn Majah (1840), al-Tahawi (1/306), al-Hakim (407), Ahmad (1/388, 441), and Ibn ‘Adi (69/1, 73/2), through Hakim ibn Jubayr, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, from his father, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
The wording is that of Ibn Majah, who, along with others, added:
“A man said to Sufyan, ‘Shu‘bah does not narrate from Hakim ibn Jubayr.’ Sufyan replied, ‘Zubayd narrated it to us from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid.’”
I say: Hakim ibn Jubayr is weak, but the corroborating narration of Zubayd—who is Zubayd ibn al-Harith al-Kufi—strengthens the hadith, for he is trustworthy and firmly reliable. Likewise, all the other narrators are trustworthy; thus, the chain through Zubayd is authentic.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good hadith.”
500 — “Whoever has hair should honor it.”
It was narrated by Abu Dawud (4163), al-Tahawi in al-Mushkil (4/321), al-Bayhaqi in al-Shu‘ab (2/265/2), and Abu Muhammad al-‘Adl in al-Fawa’id (3/1/2), through ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
This is a good chain, as al-Hafiz said in al-Fath (10/310), and in my view it is
