It also has a brief mursal corroborating report, worded: “Change the old man’s hair with henna.”
Ibn Sa‘d narrated it (5/452).
- “If permission to enter is sought from a man while he is praying, he signals permission by saying Subhan Allah; and if permission is sought from a woman while she is praying, she signals permission by clapping.”
Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in al-Sunan al-Kubra (2/247) through several routes from Hafs ibn Abdullah, who said: Ibrahim ibn Tahman narrated to me from Sulayman al-A‘mash, from Dhakwan, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to al-Bukhari’s criteria. Muslim, Abu ‘Awanah, and al-Tirmidhi also narrated it through other routes from al-A‘mash, in abbreviated form, with the wording: “Saying Subhan Allah is for men, and clapping is for women.”
Al-Tirmidhi said: “Good and authentic.”
Likewise, the two Shaykhs and others narrated it through other routes from Abu Hurayrah as a report attributed to the Prophet.
It is found in Sahih Abi Dawud, no. (867).
I have cited it with the first wording only because it is more detailed and in order to clarify the authenticity of its chain of transmission.
Ahmad also narrated in his Musnad (2/290): Marwan ibn Mu‘awiyah al-Fazari narrated to us that Yazid ibn Kaysan sought permission to enter upon Salim ibn Abi al-Ja‘d while he was praying, so he said Subhan Allah to me. When he had concluded the prayer, he said: “When a man is praying, he grants permission by saying Subhan Allah; whereas a woman grants permission by clapping.” Marwan narrated to us: ‘Awf informed us from al-Hasan, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similarly. Marwan narrated to us: ‘Awf informed me from Ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similarly.
I say: These are three chains of transmission, all of them authentic, except that the first stops at Salim ibn
