as did Abu Bakr ibn Salman al-Faqih in al-Muntaqa min Hadithihi (folio 96/1), Abu al-Qasim al-Samarqandi in a section of al-Fawaʾid al-Muntaqah (folio 112/1), Ibn ʿAdi (112/2), and al-Bayhaqi in al-Shuʿab (2/438/1), through various routes from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Abu Ghalib.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Although there is disagreement concerning Abu Ghalib, it does not reduce his hadith below the rank of good. This hadith of his is authentic on account of the preceding and forthcoming corroborating reports.
- The hadith of Tariq ibn Shihab, may Allah be pleased with him:
He was a Companion who saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, but did not hear from him, as Abu Dawud said.
It was transmitted by al-Nasaʾi (2/187), Ahmad (4/315), al-Bayhaqi, and Diya al-Maqdisi in al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah (folio 21/2).
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic, and the mursal reports of the Companions are authoritative proof.
Note
Al-Suyuti included it in al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, reporting it from Ibn Majah on the authority of Abu Saʿid; from Ahmad, Ibn Majah, al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Shuʿab, on the authority of Abu Umamah; and likewise from Ahmad, al-Nasaʾi, and al-Bayhaqi, on the authority of Tariq.
Al-Manawi said in his commentary: “The apparent implication of the author’s arrangement is that this is the hadith in its entirety. But that is not so; rather, its complete wording in the version transmitted by Ibn Majah, as with Abu Dawud, is: ‘or a tyrannical ruler.’”
I say: This addition is not found in Ibn Majah at all. Moreover, it is not part of the actual hadith; rather, it was a doubt on the part of one of Abu Dawud’s narrators, as indicated by its absence from the reports of Abu Saʿid and of the others we have mentioned. Thus, there is no point in faulting al-Suyuti for omitting it. It is, however, found in al-Khatib’s al-Tarikh (7/239), through the route of ʿAtiyyah from Abu Saʿid. It is therefore weak and rejected, since ʿAtiyyah alone reported it.
- The hadith of Jabir:
Al-ʿUqayli transmitted it in al-Duʿafaʾ (321) through the route of ʿAmmar ibn
