the harm of his concealment in transmission. Ibn Abi Husayn’s name was ʿUmar ibn Saʿid ibn Abi Husayn al-Nawfali al-Makki.
It has another route from al-Qasim, narrated by al-Walid ibn Muslim: Zuhayr ibn Muhammad narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim, from his father, from ʿAʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“When Allah intends good for a ruler, He grants him a truthful adviser: if he forgets, the adviser reminds him; and if he remembers, the adviser assists him. But when Allah intends otherwise for him, He grants him an evil adviser: if he forgets, the adviser does not remind him; and if he remembers, the adviser does not assist him.”
Abu Dawud (2932) and Ibn Hibban, in his Sahih (1551—Mawarid), recorded it through two routes from al-Walid with this chain. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the Two Sahihs, except for Zuhayr ibn Muhammad—Abu al-Mundhir al-Khurasani—who was weak because of his deficient memory.
Al-Hafiz said: “The narrations of the people of Syria from him are unsound, and he was deemed weak on account of them. Al-Bukhari reported from Ahmad: ‘It is as though the Zuhayr from whom the Syrians narrate is another person.’ Abu Hatim said: ‘He narrated in Syria from memory and made many errors.’”
I say: Yet in this hadith he retained it accurately, or nearly so, for he did not depart from the meaning of Baqiyyah’s hadith. Allah knows best.
490 — “O people, I am only a mercy bestowed.”
Ibn Saʿd recorded it in al-Tabaqat (1/192, Beirut edition): Wakiʿ ibn al-Jarrah informed us: al-Aʿmash informed us from Abu Salih, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it—and then he cited it.
I say: This is an authentic mursal chain of transmission.
Abu Saʿid ibn al-Aʿrabi likewise recorded it in al-Muʿjam (fol. 106/2), saying: Ibrahim informed us; Wakiʿ informed us with this chain.
