“Should I beat him?” He said: “Pardon him …” The hadith.
Ahmad recorded it (2/90): Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid narrated to us; Saʿid—meaning Ibn Abi Ayyub—narrated to us.
I say: This chain of transmission is also authentic. Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (3/163): “Abu Yaʿla also transmitted it from him through a good chain, and it is a version recorded by al-Tirmidhi.”
I say: It is not found in al-Tirmidhi with this wording; take note of this.
He then said: “In some copies of Abu Dawud, it reads: ‘ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr.’”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in his Tarikh through the hadith of ʿAbbas ibn Julayd, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs; and also through his narration from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “Some narrated this hadith with this chain of transmission and said: ‘From ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr.’ Abu Nasr al-Amir mentioned that ʿAbbas ibn Julayd narrated from both of them, as al-Bukhari stated. Yet neither Ibn Yunus, in Tarikh Misr, nor Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned his narration from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs. Allah knows best.”
I say: The aforementioned narration of Saʿid ibn Abi Ayyub explicitly identifies him as ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, and Saʿid is trustworthy and reliable. It is therefore his narration that is to be relied upon. Allah knows best.
489 — “Whomever among you is entrusted with an office, and Allah wills good for him, He appoints for him a righteous adviser: if he forgets, the adviser reminds him; and if he remembers, the adviser assists him.”
Al-Nasaʾi recorded it (2/187) through Baqiyyah, who said: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Husayn, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, who said: I heard my paternal aunt say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and then he cited it.
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic; its narrators are trustworthy. Baqiyyah explicitly stated that he had heard it directly, thereby sparing us from
