Ghalib, from Abu Umamah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said the above.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of Muslim, apart from Abu Ghalib—the companion of Abu Umamah—whose hadith are good. Al-Taqrib states: “Truthful, but makes mistakes.”
Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (3/144): “Al-Tabarani transmitted it in al-Kabir, and its narrators are trustworthy.” Al-Haythami said in al-Majmaʿ (5/235): “Al-Tabarani transmitted it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat, and the narrators of al-Kabir are trustworthy.”
This indicates that the chain in al-Awsat is not likewise, for he recorded it there (1/197/2) through al-ʿAlaʾ ibn Sulayman, from al-Khalil ibn Murrah, from Abu Ghalib, with this chain, and said: “No one narrated it from al-Khalil except al-ʿAlaʾ.”
I say: Both of them are weak.
Ibn Abi ʿAsim also recorded the hadith in al-Sunnah (4/1), as did Ibn Samʿun the preacher in “The Fifteenth Session” (53–54), through Musa ibn Khalf al-ʿAmi, who said: Al-Muʿalla ibn Ziyad narrated to us, from Muʿawiyah ibn Qurrah, from Maʿqil ibn Yasar, attributed to the Prophet, with the same wording.
Its narrators are trustworthy, except that this al-ʿAmi is truthful but prone to errors, as stated in al-Taqrib. I therefore fear that he may have erred in attributing its chain to al-Muʿalla. However, Ibn Abi ʿAsim also transmitted it through Ibn al-Mubarak: Muniʿ narrated to me; Muʿawiyah ibn Qurrah narrated to me, with the same report.
However, I have not identified this Muniʿ. And Allah knows best.
