and Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (fol. 114/2), al-Ḥākim (3/71, 145), Aḥmad in al-Musnad (5/220, 221), al-Rūyānī in his Musnad (25/136/1), Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī in al-Mafārīd (3/15/2), Abū Ḥafṣ al-Ṣayrafī in his Hadith collection (fol. 261/1), Khaythamah ibn Sulaymān in Faḍāʾil al-Ṣaḥābah (3/108–109), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/8/1), Abū Nuʿaym in Faḍāʾil al-Ṣaḥābah (2/261/2), and al-Bayhaqī in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah (vol. 2), through various chains from Saʿīd ibn Jumhān, from Safīnah Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: He then narrated it as a report attributed to the Prophet.
Abū Dāwūd’s wording is:
“The Prophetic caliphate will last thirty years; then Allah will grant dominion—or His dominion—to whomever He wills.”
Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, Aḥmad, and others added:
“Safīnah said: Abu Bakr’s caliphate was two years; ʿUmar’s caliphate, may Allah be pleased with him, was ten years; ʿUthmān’s caliphate was twelve years; and ʿAlī’s caliphate, may Allah be pleased with him, was six years.”
Al-Tirmidhī added:
“Saʿīd said: I said to him, ‘The Umayyads claim that the caliphate belongs to them.’ He replied, ‘The sons of al-Zarqāʾ have lied. Rather, they are kings—among the worst of kings.’”
I say: This addition was narrated solely by Ḥushraj ibn Nubātah from Saʿīd ibn Jumhān, and it is weak, because this Ḥushraj is himself weak. Al-Dhahabī included him in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ and said:
“Al-Nasāʾī said: He is not strong.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but prone to error.”
I say: As for the basic hadith, it is established.
Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a good hadith. More than one narrator has reported it from Saʿīd ibn Jumhān, and we know it only”
