The compiler of Muntakhab Kanz al-ʿUmmāl (2/207) cited the hadith in its entirety, including the additional wording found in Abū Dāwūd, and said:
“It was narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah and Abū Saʿīd al-Naqqāsh in al-Quḍāt.”
The hadith is corroborated by another report attributed to the Prophet, worded:
“I am only a human being. Whatever I convey to you from Allah is true; but what I say concerning it of my own accord, I am only a human being: I may be right or I may err.”
Al-Bazzār recorded it in his Musnad (p. 27): Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Iṣbahānī related to us; Ḥusayn ibn Ḥafṣ related to us; Khāṭib ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīrah related to us, from his father, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was walking among the palm groves of Medina, and the people began to say, ‘It contains a wasq, a measure of volume.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘It contains such-and-such.’ They said, ‘Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then …” And he cited it.
Al-Bazzār said: “We know of no report from Ibn ʿAbbās except through this chain of transmission.”
Al-Haythamī said: “Its chain of transmission is good, except that I have not seen a biographical notice for al-Bazzār’s shaykh.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “I say: he was the renowned hadith master Samūyah. Abū Nuʿaym included his biography in his history, and Ibn Mandah, Abū al-Shaykh, Abū Nuʿaym, and others declared him reliable.”
456 — “Ruined and lost is the servant in whose heart Allah Most High has not placed mercy for mankind.”
Al-Dūlābī (1/173) and Ibn ʿAsākir, in Tārīkh Dimashq (7/113/2), recorded it through two chains from Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr, from Yazīd ibn Ayham Abū Rawāḥah, from ʿAmr ibn Ḥabīb, who said to Saʿīd ibn Khālid ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān: “Did you not know that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:”
