and al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (2/282), Aḥmad (6/290–291, 307), and Abū Yaʿlā (4/1635–1636), all of whom narrated it from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Zaynab bint Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
The wording is that of Ibn Mājah, then Aḥmad. They alone reported the phrase: “which he will bring with him on the Day of Resurrection.” This is an additional wording that meets the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Al-Zuhrī also corroborated it from ʿUrwah in similar wording. It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/308), while others narrated it with the wording: “I am only a human being….” It will come under no. 1162.
It also has another chain that explains the occasion for the hadith. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2/115), al-Ṭaḥāwī (2/287), and Aḥmad (6/320), through Usāmah ibn Zayd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rāfiʿ, from Umm Salamah, who said:
“Two men from the Anṣār came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, disputing over inheritances between them whose details had become effaced, and neither of them had any evidence.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then mentioned the hadith, except that he said: “He will bring it on the Day of Resurrection as a collar around his neck.” The two men wept, and each of them said, “My right belongs to my brother.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Since you have said this, go and divide it; then seek out what is right, draw lots, and let each of you release the other from any claim.”
In one narration of Abū Dāwūd: “I only judge between you according to my own judgment in matters concerning which no revelation has come to me.”
This Usāmah is al-Laythī, not al-ʿAdawī. Thus, the chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria, if al-ʿAdawī had retained it accurately; for there is some weakness in his retention. It states in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but makes errors.” As you can see, he has related additional details not found in any of the narrations of the reliable transmitters, which leads us to refrain from relying as evidence on what he alone narrates. And Allah knows best.
