445 — “Beware: whoever wrongs a person under covenant, diminishes his rights, burdens him beyond his capacity, or takes something from him without his willing consent—I shall be his adversary on the Day of Resurrection.”
Abū Dāwūd (2/46) and al-Bayhaqī, in his Sunan (9/205), narrated it from Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, from a number of—al-Bayhaqī said: thirty—sons of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, from their fathers, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with this wording.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī said in Fatḥ al-Mughīth (4/4):
“This is a sound chain of transmission, even though it contains unnamed narrators, for they are a number of the sons of the Companions sufficient to reach the degree of recurrent mass transmission, in which individual uprightness is not stipulated.”
Al-Sakhāwī said in al-Maqāṣid, p. 185: “Its chain is unobjectionable. The unknown identity of the unnamed sons of the Companions does not impair it, for they are a number by which their unknown status is remedied. This is why Abū Dāwūd made no comment on it.” He then said: “It has corroborating reports, which I have explained in a separate treatise devoted to this hadith. Among them is a report from ʿUmar ibn Saʿd, attributed to the Prophet: ‘On the Day of Resurrection, I shall be the advocate of the orphan and the person under covenant; and whoever I contend against, I shall overcome.’”
I say: See, “Does one of you suppose, while reclining ...”; and, in the other book, “My Lord has forbidden me to wrong a person under covenant” (1195), and “Perhaps you are fighting a people ...” (2947).
446 — “If a man were to be dragged upon his face, from the day he was born until the day he died in old age, seeking the pleasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, he would regard it as insignificant on the Day of Resurrection.”
Aḥmad (4/185), al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (1/1/15), Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm in his Hadith collection (no. 54—my copy), Abū Bakr al-Shāshī in al-Fawāʾid (fol. 107/1), and Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (2/15; 5/219) narrated it through Baqiyyah, who said: Buḥayr ibn Saʿd narrated to me, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he then cited it.
