through Jarīr, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Jābir ibn Samurah, who said:
“ʿUmar addressed the people at al-Jābiyah and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood in a position like mine here and said…’” Then he mentioned it. This is Ahmad’s wording.
This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are among those of the Six Books. Al-Hakim indicated in al-Mustadrak (1/114) that it contains a hidden defect, but he did not identify it. Perhaps it is what has been said concerning ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr: that he became confused and his memory deteriorated. Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic, for it has come through other routes.
Ahmad (1, no. 114), al-Tirmidhi (3/207, Tuhfah), al-Hakim—who authenticated it—and al-Bayhaqi (7/91) recorded it through ʿAbdullah ibn al-Mubarak, who said: Muhammad ibn Sawqah reported to us, from ʿAbdullah ibn Dinar, from Ibn ʿUmar, that ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab addressed the people at al-Jābiyah and then mentioned it.
Al-Hakim said: “It is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim,” and al-Dhahabi concurred. It is as they said.
Al-Hakim then said:
“We have also transmitted it with an authentic chain from Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas, from ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him.”
He then cited it through Muhammad ibn Muhajir ibn Mismar, who said: My father related to me, from ʿAmir ibn Saʿd, from his father, who said: ʿUmar stood at al-Jābiyah and said: “May Allah have mercy on a man who hears my words and comprehends them. I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stand among us as I stand among you, and then say…” Then he mentioned it.
Al-Dhahabi said: “This is authentic.”
I say: As for Muhammad ibn Muhajir ibn Mismar, I have found no one who mentioned him, unless he is Muhammad ibn Muhajir al-Qurashi, who is somewhat weak, as stated in al-Taqrib.
