al-Sahmi, who said: Hatim ibn Abi Saghirah narrated to us from al-Nuʿman ibn Salim that ʿAmr ibn Aws informed him that his father, Aws, said it. This too is an authentic chain meeting Muslim’s criteria. It appears that al-Nuʿman initially narrated it in this manner, from ʿAmr, from Aws; then he narrated it directly from Aws, without an intermediary.
The sixth is al-Nuʿman ibn Bashir. Al-Nasaʾi and al-Bazzar narrated it in his Musnad (p. 4, Maktab photocopy edition), through Israʾil, from Simak, from him, with wording similar to the hadith of Aws. Its chain is authentic, and its narrators are those of the Sahih collections. In al-Fath (12/232), al-Hafiz attributed it to al-Bazzar alone, thereby going far afield.
The seventh is Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him. It has already preceded under no. 303. I add here that it is authentic according to the criteria of both al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih (1/395) through this route, except that he did not mention the words, “They have the same rights as the Muslims,” and so on; and he added: “Their reckoning is with Allah.” He said: Ibn Abi Maryam said: Yahya informed us; Humayd narrated to us; Anas narrated to us from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Al-Bukhari cited this suspended report only to dispel the suspicion of concealment in transmission on Humayd’s part, even though it has been established that he heard this hadith from Anas. Ibn Nasr gave its connected chain in al-Iman, as did Ibn Mandah, as mentioned in al-Fath.
It has also been narrated from Anas in a report attributed directly to the Prophet with the wording:
