“I shall indeed give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and through whom Allah will grant victory.” Umar said: “I had never desired command before that day; yet I eagerly sought it, hoping that it would be given to me.”
The following day, he summoned Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, and gave it to him. He said: “Fight, and do not turn back until Allah grants you victory.” Ali proceeded a short distance, then called out: “O Messenger of Allah, for what should I fight them?” He said: “Until they testify that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Then, when they do so, they have ...” etc.
Al-Tayalisi narrated it, no. (2441): Wahb narrated to us from Suhayl, through this chain. Ahmad also narrated it through this route (2/384), and this is his wording. This is an authentic chain according to Muslim’s criteria.
- From Kathir ibn Ubayd, from him, with the wording:
“I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, and give the zakah. Then their blood and wealth have been made inviolable to me, and their reckoning is with Allah.”
Ahmad narrated it (2/345) through the route of Sa'id ibn Kathir ibn Ubayd, from him.
This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are known and reliable, except Kathir ibn Ubayd. A number of scholars narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban declared him reliable. Ibn Khuzaymah also narrated it through this route, as cited in Fath al-Bari (12/232).
I mentioned earlier that the hadith was narrated by a group of the Companions, and I mentioned the first of them.
The second is Ibn Umar, and its wording is:
“I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, and give the zakah. When they do so, they safeguard from me their blood and wealth, except by the right of Islam; and their reckoning is with Allah.”
