and al-Dhahabi concurred.
I say: He also narrated it in his Sahih (10/74) through Ayyub, from Ikrimah, from him, but without Ayyub’s statement: “I was informed …” Ibn Majah (2/336) likewise narrated it, as did Ahmad in one of his versions (2/247, 327).
Hammad ibn Zayd also corroborated him in narrating it from Ikrimah, from him. Ahmad narrated it (2/353), and its chain of transmission meets al-Bukhari’s conditions. Al-Haythami cited it in al-Majmaʿ (5/78) and said:
“Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat, and its narrators are trustworthy.”
He overlooked the fact that it appears in one of the Six Books. Al-Mundhiri mentioned it in al-Targhib (3/118), reporting it from al-Hakim but omitting the words, “Ayyub said.” This was not well done, for it thereby makes Ayyub’s statement an interpolation into the hadith as a statement of Abu Hurayrah; and the problem with this is obvious.
The hadith has a corroborating report from Ibn Abbas, with wording like that of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah. Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud (2/134), al-Darimi (2/89–118–119), Ibn Majah (2/336), and Ahmad (1/226, 241, 321, 339) narrated it through Ikrimah, from him.
It also has a corroborating report with the wording:
“He forbade drinking from the mouth of a waterskin, for that causes it to become foul-smelling.”
400 — “He forbade drinking from the mouth of a waterskin, for that causes it to become foul-smelling.”
Al-Hakim narrated it (4/140) through al-Harith ibn Abi Usamah: Rawh ibn Ubadah narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from Aishah, who attributed it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
He said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.”
