Thumamah ibn Abd Allah ibn Anas also narrated it from Anas, but without the words: “And he would say: ‘It is more satisfying …’”
It was narrated by Muslim, al-Nasa’i, al-Tirmidhi, and Ahmad (3/114, 128, 185). In a version recorded by al-Nasa’i through the first chain, the wording is:
“When any one of you drinks, let him take three breaths, for that is more satisfying and more wholesome.”
Its chain of transmission is as follows: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim informed us; he said: Waki‘ narrated to us; he said: Hisham ibn Abi Abd Allah narrated to me from Anas.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Both Hisham and Abd al-Warith ibn Sa‘id were trustworthy and highly reliable, yet they differed in the wording they narrated from Abu Isam: one of them reported it as an account of the Prophet’s practice, peace and blessings be upon him, while the other reported it as one of his statements. The former is more likely, as supported by the second route from Anas, which likewise reports his practice.
Note:
In al-Jami‘ al-Saghir, al-Suyuti attributed this hadith to al-Bukhari and Muslim, and to the four Sunan compilers, but I have not found it in al-Bukhari or Ibn Majah. And Allah knows best.
388 — “He prohibited drinking from the chipped edge of a vessel and blowing into a drink.”
It was narrated by Abu Dawud (3722), Ibn Hibban (1366), and Ahmad (3/80), as well as by his son Abd Allah, through Qurrah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Ibn Shihab, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Utbah, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, who said: He then mentioned it as a report attributed to the Prophet.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators were among Muslim’s narrators, were it not for the criticism concerning Qurrah ibn Abd al-Rahman.
