for example; or because he has not used the siwāk or rinsed his mouth for some time; or because the breath rises with the vapours of the stomach. Blowing, in all these cases, is more objectionable than breathing.”
- The permissibility of drinking in a single breath, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not object when the man said: “I am not quenched by a single breath.” Had drinking in a single breath been impermissible, he would have made that clear to him, and would have said, for example: “And is it permissible to drink in a single breath?!”
Had that not been permissible, this would have been more appropriate than telling him: “Move the cup away ...” His statement thus indicates that drinking in a single breath is permissible, and that, if one wishes to breathe, he should breathe outside the vessel. This is explicitly stated in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“When one of you drinks, let him not breathe into the vessel. If he wishes to resume drinking, let him move the vessel away, then resume, if he wishes.”
386 — “When one of you drinks, let him not breathe into the vessel. If he wishes to resume drinking, let him move the vessel away, then resume, if he wishes.”
Ibn Majah (3427) and al-Hakim (4/139) narrated it through the route of al-Harith ibn Abi Dhibab, from his uncle, from Abu Hurayrah.
Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
Al-Hafiz made no comment on it in al-Fath (10/81). In my view, its chain of transmission is good, for this al-Harith is Ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Dhibab. There is nothing objectionable about him, as Abu Zur'ah said.
Ibn Mandah mentioned his uncle among the Companions and named him Iyad, as al-Hafiz stated in al-Tahdhib.
Al-Busiri said in al-Zawa'id (folio 206/2):
“This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy, and al-Harith’s uncle was named Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith.”
