Under no. 67, through several chains, the strongest of which is authentic with the additional wording: “Then help him down.” See it there.
An example of the other category is the hadith that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood when his foster brother approached him and seated him before himself. This hadith is weak, with a double break in its chain of transmission. Even if it were authentic, it would still provide no evidence for the claim; I have explained all of this in al-Ahadith al-Da'ifah (1148).
358 — “No person in this world was more beloved to them to see than the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Yet, when they saw him, they did not stand for him, because they knew that he disliked it.”
Reported by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (946), al-Tirmidhi (2/125), al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (2/39), Ahmad (3/132), and Abu Ya'la in his Musnad (fol. 183/2)—the wording being his—through several chains from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Humayd, from Anas, who related it. Al-Tirmidhi said: “This hadith is good, authentic, and singular through this route.”
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim.
This hadith further strengthens what the preceding hadith indicates: that standing as a mark of honour is prohibited. For had such standing been a legislated form of honour, it would not have been permissible for him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to dislike his Companions’ doing it for him. He was more deserving of honour than anyone, and they knew his right over them better than anyone.
Moreover, the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, disliked his Companions’ standing for him. Therefore, a Muslim—especially one who is among the people of knowledge and those looked to as examples—should dislike this for himself, following his example, may Allah bless him and grant him peace; and he should dislike it for other Muslims as well, in view of his saying, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother the good that he loves for himself.” Thus, no one should stand for him, nor should he stand for anyone. Rather, it is even more fitting that they dislike such standing than it was for the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
