“Muʿāwiyah came out and saw them standing for him as he emerged. He said to them, ‘Sit down, for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: Whoever is pleased that the sons of Adam should stand for him, the Fire becomes incumbent upon him.’”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy narrators of Muslim, apart from al-Mukhalliṣ’s teacher, ʿAbd Allāh—the hadith master Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī—and Mughīrah ibn Muslim al-Sarrāj; both are undisputedly trustworthy. Dāwūd is Ibn Rashīd, and Marwān is Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazārī al-Kūfī, the hadith master.
Shabābah ibn Sawwār also corroborated him, transmitting it from Mughīrah ibn Muslim, except that he said: “Whoever wishes men to assemble for him …,” the remainder being the same.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī (2/38–39) and al-Khaṭīb in Tārīkh Baghdād (13/193) reported it. In the latter work (11/361), the hadith also has a mursal corroborating report in an amusing account, which he related through ʿAbd al-Razzāq ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd, who said: I heard my father say:
“When al-Maʾmūn summoned the jewel merchants and negotiated with them over merchandise they had brought, he rose to attend to some need and then returned. Everyone in the gathering stood except Ibn al-Jaʿd, who did not stand. Al-Maʾmūn looked at him with apparent anger, then took him aside and said to him, ‘Shaykh, what prevented you from standing for me as your companions stood?’
ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd replied, ‘It was out of my high regard for the Commander of the Faithful, in view of the hadith that we narrate from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’
He asked, ‘What is it?’
ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd said, ‘I heard al-Mubārak ibn Fuḍālah say: I heard al-Ḥasan say that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said’”—and he cited it with the first wording.
Al-Maʾmūn then lowered his head, reflecting on the hadith. He subsequently raised his head and said, ‘Nothing is to be bought except from this shaykh.’ That day, he bought from him goods worth thirty thousand dinars.”
I say: Thus, in the case of ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd—who was trustworthy and firmly reliable—the statement of Allah proved true: “Whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.”
