was truthful, though he made errors. Thus, through the combined strength of these corroborating reports, it is established from Shuʿbah.
The hadith has another route, recorded by al-Ḥusayn al-Marwazī in Zawāʾid al-Zuhd li-Ibn al-Mubārak (folio 123/1—Kawākib 575), through an authentic chain from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah, who said: “It was mentioned to me that Abū Sabrah ibn Salamah heard ... ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ...” He then cited it as a report attributed to the Prophet, and it includes a story.
In sum, the hadith, through these routes, is good or authentic. Allah knows best.
356 — “Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to me and said: ‘I came to you last night, but nothing prevented me from entering the house in which you were except that there was an image of a man in the house, and there was a thin curtain containing images. So order that the head of the image be cut off, so that it becomes like the form of a tree; and order that the curtain be cut up.’
In another version: ‘There is a curtain on the wall in the house containing images, so cut off their heads and make it into a carpet or cushions to be trodden upon, for we do not enter a house in which there are images.’ Thus, two cushions were made from it to be trodden upon. And order that the dog be taken out.’

He said: ‘And he continued urging me concerning the neighbour until I thought—or concluded—that he would make him an heir.’”
It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/305, 478), whose wording is cited here; by Abū Dāwūd (4158); al-Tirmidhī (2/132); and Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1487), through the route of Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq, from
