Al-Haythami’s statement in al-Majmaʿ (3/306), “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat and al-Kabir, and its narrators are among those of the Sahih collections,” is not correct without qualification. It was his habit to make such statements as, “Its narrators are among those of the Sahih collections,” by which he meant the narrators above al-Tabarani’s own shaykh. Bear this in mind, for it is useful in matters of disagreement and critical investigation.
I then found the hadith in Tarikh Ibn Asakir (16/241/2), through Isa ibn Hammad, who said: “Al-Layth informed us of it.”
352 — “Wear new clothing, live a praiseworthy life, and die a martyr.”
Ibn Majah (3558), Ibn al-Sunni in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah (262), Ahmad and Ishaq in their respective Musnads, al-Nasa’i in al-Kubra, and al-Tabarani all narrated it from Abd al-Razzaq, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from Salim ibn Abd Allah ibn Umar, from his father, who said:
“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, wearing a white garment and asked, ‘Is this garment of yours new or washed?’ He replied, ‘Rather, it has been washed’—while another narration has, ‘New.’ Thereupon, he said the above.”
Al-Dabari added: “May Allah grant you delight in this world and the Hereafter.” He said: “And the same to you, Messenger of Allah.”
Al-Hafiz said in Nata’ij al-Afkar (1/27/2):
“This is a good, singular hadith, and the narrators in its chain of transmission are among those of the Sahih collections. However, al-Nasa’i found fault with it, saying: ‘This is a rejected hadith; Yahya al-Qattan denounced it as a narration of Abd al-Razzaq.’ Al-Nasa’i said: ‘It has also been narrated from him—that is, al-Zuhri—with a connected chain, and it has been narrated from him as mursal.’ He said:
