337 — “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not wear silk or gold.”
Al-Hakim transmitted it (4/191) through the route of Amr ibn al-Harith and another, from Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah al-Bahili—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said this.
He said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
I say: Rather, it is good, for al-Qasim—namely, Ibn Abd al-Rahman Abu Abd al-Rahman, the companion of Abu Umamah—was criticized by some scholars. However, the preponderant conclusion from the totality of the scholars’ comments concerning him is that his hadith is good. The hadith master said in al-Taqrib: “Truthful.”
Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman was Ibn Isa al-Dimashqi, of Khurasani origin. Ibn Ma'in, al-Nasa'i, and others deemed him trustworthy.
As for Amr ibn al-Harith, he was Abu Ayyub al-Misri, a trustworthy jurist and hadith master.
As for the “other” referred to in the chain of transmission, he apparently was Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah. We have found him mentioned alongside Amr ibn al-Harith in more than one hadith. Ahmad transmitted it through his route, saying (5/261): Yahya ibn Ishaq narrated to us: Ibn Lahi'ah informed me, from Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman, through the same chain.
Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (3/103):
“Ahmad transmitted it, and its narrators are trustworthy!”
