4005 — “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, cowardice and miserliness, old age, and the torment of the grave.
O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it; You are the best to purify it. You are its Protector and Master.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, a heart that does not humble itself, a soul that is never satisfied, and a supplication that is not answered.”
Muslim narrated it (8/81), as did al-Baghawī in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (5/158)—and he authenticated it—Ibn Abī Shaybah (3/374), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (5/227/5085), all through ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith and Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, both from Zayd ibn Arqam, who said:
“I tell you only what the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say. He would say…” Then he mentioned it.
Al-Nasāʾī also narrated it (2/315 and 322), as did Aḥmad (4/371), ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd (1/245/267), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (5086 and 5088), all from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith alone. Al-Ṭabarānī added, after the words, “and the torment of the grave”:
“and the tribulation of the Dajjāl.”
Its chain of transmission is good, but it is anomalous in this hadith. Nevertheless, it has been established in more than one authentic hadith. Perhaps this is what led al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Suyūṭī to include it in the hadith, citing it as narrated by Aḥmad, ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, Muslim, and al-Nasāʾī! Accordingly, he fell short by not attributing it to al-Ṭabarānī, who alone reported this addition, unlike the others.
