a lower wrap and an upper cloak, with his lower wrap hanging below his ankles. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “O ʿAmr ibn Zurārah, Allah does not love those who let their garments hang below their ankles.”
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr (8/277/7909) through two routes from Ibrāhīm ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-Ḥimṣī: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Sāʾib, from al-Qāsim, from him.
It has preceded under hadith 2682, where we cited al-Haythamī as saying (5/124):
“Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it through several chains, and the narrators of one of them are trustworthy.”
I now say: Apparently, he meant this chain, and it is as he said. It is good, were it not for the fact that al-Walīd ibn Muslim practised concealment in transmission by omitting an unreliable intermediary between two reliable narrators.
The other report is narrated by Abū al-Ḥajjāj, from Saʿīd al-Thaqafī, from a man of his people, who said:
A man passed by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, dragging his lower wrap, so he said to him: “Raise your lower wrap, for Allah does not love those who let their garments hang below their ankles.” The man replied, “My calves are thin!” The Messenger of Allah said: “There is nothing about your lower wrap uglier than what is about your calves.”
Al-Bayhaqī narrated it in Shuʿab al-Īmān (2/232/2–223/1).
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Abū al-Ḥajjāj and his Thaqafī shaykh, whom I have been unable to identify.
In sum, the hadith is good when all its routes are considered together. And Allah knows best.
