“We were with Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh when he said: ‘The people of Iraq will soon receive no qafīz-measure or dirham.’ We asked, ‘Why will that be?’ He said, ‘Because of the non-Arabs, who will prevent that.’ Then he said, ‘The people of Syria will soon receive no dīnār or mudd-measure.’ We asked, ‘Why will that be?’ He said, ‘Because of the Romans.’ He then remained silent for a while and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ...’” He then mentioned it.
I said to Abū Naḍrah and Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, “Do you think that he was ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz?” They replied, “No.”
Muslim and al-Ḥākim (4/454) also narrated it through Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd and Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who both related it from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in a shortened form: “At the end of time there will be a caliph who distributes wealth without counting it.”
Aḥmad also narrated it (3/49, 60, and 96) through other routes from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd alone.
He then narrated it (3/98) from Mujālid, from Abū al-Waddāk, from Abū Saʿīd, who said:
“I said, ‘By Allah, no ruler comes to us except that he is worse than the one before him, and no year comes except that it is worse than the one before it.’ He said, ‘Had I not heard something from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, I would have said as you do. But I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:
“Among your rulers will be a ruler who gives out wealth by the handful, without counting it. A man will come to him and ask him, and he will say, ‘Take.’ So the man will spread out his garment, and he will pour it into it by the handful.’” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spread out the coarse cloak he was wearing, illustrating what the man would do; then he gathered its edges about himself, took it, and departed.
Mujālid—ibn Saʿīd—is not strong.
