that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about the earnings of a cupper, and he said: “...” He then mentioned it.
Aḥmad narrated it (3/307 and 381). Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s conditions.
Another report is narrated by Abū Balj Yaḥyā ibn Abī Sulaym, who said: I heard ʿAbāyah ibn Rifāʿah ibn Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj relate:
When his grandfather died, he left behind a slave-girl, a water-drawing camel, a slave boy who performed cupping, and some land. Concerning the slave-girl, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade profiting from her earnings. Shuʿbah said: “For fear that she might commit fornication.” He said: “Whatever the cupper earns, feed it to the water-drawing camel.” And concerning the land, he said: “Cultivate it, or leave it.”
Aḥmad narrated it (4/141)—this is his wording—as did al-Ṭabarānī (4405–4408).
I say: This Abū Balj is trustworthy, though there is some weakness in him; thus, the chain is authentic in light of what has preceded.
A third supporting report is narrated by Yazīd ibn Rabīʿah: Abū al-Ashʿath narrated to us from Thawbān:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had himself cupped and gave the cupper his wages, and he said: “...” He then mentioned it.
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr (1422).
However, this Yazīd is an abandoned narrator.
Note: The documentation of this hadith has previously appeared under no. 1400 in this Silsilah, but it contains benefits here that are not found there. Praise be to Allah.
4001—“At the end of my ummah there will be a caliph who will distribute wealth by the handful, without counting it.”
Muslim narrated it (8/185), as did Aḥmad (3/317), through al-Jurayrī, from Abū Naḍrah, who said:
